Reflections of the Moon
This piece was inspired by the paint that drips off the edge of my paintings as I paint. It dries to form a leathery 'skin', which in this case was collaged to form the shadowy sides of the snowy mountain, which are perhaps shielded from the wind, so protected from the falling snow. This collaging process is painstaking, as care is taken to match the swirls and colours within the paint. Texture paste was used to sculpt the shape of the mountains and it forms the jagged edges and smooth slopes of the peaks.
The glisten of the snow is caused by intereference paints, which are blown over the texture paste giving the illusion of reflections of the moonlight. To create the moon, fluid paints were loosely blended using air pressure. I love the matte finish of the paints in this piece, so I used matte varnish instead my usual high gloss finish.
Original, acrylic and mixed media on canvas, finished with matte varnish and professionally framed.
